BlastBloc® is an innovative, high-performance replacement for defensive structures typically built with sandbags, pyramid stacked wire baskets, concrete blocks, plywood or other construction material. Combining the inherent simplicity of the sandbag with the structural attributes of a building block, BlastBloc® is a rapidly transportable, air-deployable, expeditionary earth-filled barrier that is both lightweight and collapsible. Unlike many other force protection products on the market, BlastBloc® is space-saving, repairable, reusable and does not rot or mildew.

BlastBloc® produces robust, efficient, cost-effective structures ideal for dangerous, war-ravaged, economically deficient and isolated areas where performance, speed of construction and safety are imperative. BlastBloc® was developed to support extended operations in harsh, remote and hostile territories where self-sufficiency, stealth, mobility and performance can often mean the difference between life and death. Created with Special Forces mobility in mind, BlastBloc® offers simple set-up, rapid take-down, and quick-transport capabilities. Most importantly, BlastBloc® addresses the U.S. Army’s specific “solutions sought” regarding present and future basecamp protection (Costa 2005):

  • The ability to perform well in all environments and climates
  • Easily transportable in a single Humvee
  • Quick erect and strike capabilities
  • Rapid ingress and egress
  • Minimized power requirements and maintenance

The unique shape of BlastBloc® combined with its advanced polymers and alloys, demonstrate outstanding, self-healing, shock-absorption, bullet stopping and blast mitigating abilities. In third party testing conducted at the MREL ballistic and blast testing facility in Ontario, Canada, first generation prototypes easily defeated multiple rounds of .40 cal, .308. and 223. BlastBloc® also impressively mitigated shrapnel dispersion and survived a 105mm bomb from 2 meters away. In recent tests, second generation prototypes of BlastBloc® defeated multiple rounds from the Barrett .50 cal. sniper rifle, M16 assault rifle, .40 cal., .338 Magnum, .45 Magnum, .357 Magnum, and a 12-guage shotgun –all at close range.

BlastBloc® structures are built swiftly by a labor pool with no special skill-set and with minimal training. No mortar, mixes or special tools are required to rapidly build walls, barriers, revetments or other similar structures. As a modular unit, BlastBloc® structures may be built in different configurations to meet changing threat requirements. If available, general construction material loaders can save time and energy during the ballast material loading phase of the construction process, however, material compaction is not required.
